My ST1 O&G interview experience

MY ST1 O&G  INTERVIEW 2017/2018

I appeared in ST1 O&G interview in 2017 for the first time. I did not get the offer first time round. However, I was not only successful in second attempt in 2018 but also got deanery of my choice.

·         What to bring to interview:

You will need to bring the ORIGINAL plus ONE COPY of each of the following documents:

1. Passport (please provide a copy of the following pages: front cover, photo page and, if applicable, page showing your current visa stamp)
2. Two x proof of address documents - Bank/Credit card statement(s) / Utility bill/ mobile phone bill dated within the last 3 months OR Council Tax statement / Insurance certificate / Mortgage statement dated within the last 12 months.
3. Current GMC proof of registration
4. Original evidence of right to work in the UK (If applicable). For example, evidence of visa status including letter from Home Office accepting you onto relevant scheme and/or the relevant pages of your passport.
5. Medical degree certificate (with translated copy, if applicable)
6. Original proof of English language (if applicable)
7. Original proof of foundation competences – This could be evidence you are currently in Foundation training/Your FACD 5.2 or Alternative Certificate
8. Original ALS certificate – or proof that you have booked onto a course before August 2017.

·         Vacancies:
In 2017 there were vacancies in the following regions (I applied in round 2 as was not eligible for round 1 at that due to being non-UK national)

1. North East England (approx. 5 posts)
2. Wales (approx. 1 post)
3. Yorkshire and Humber (approx. 1 post)

·   Interview format:

For interview NO portfolio is required.

With regards to the interview format – there are usually three stations, each of 15 minutes:

 · Communication Station:
Usually involves tackling situations of conflicts with patients, family members or colleagues.
There are excellent scenarios mentioned in this book (link below)
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Medical-Interviews-3rd-comprehensive-techniques/dp/1905812248

· Clinical Station:
4-5 clinical scenarios to prioritize. One patient is usually the sickest who you obviously need to review first. One is usually clearly non-urgent. I found GP stage 3 scenarios quite relevant for preparation.

 · Structured Interview Station:
These were mostly from the medical interviews book (link shared above)
Questions on clinical governance like audit, service evaluation projects, research etc could be asked.

Let me know if you have any questions related to interview :)
